The NMV Library is a specialized library emphasizing the arts, religions and history of Asia.

The collection contains 4000 books and periodicals in English, French, German and Japanese.

This Library is a wonderful way to discover Asia and Thailand and is full of hidden treasures.

Library will be closed on
Wednesday 4 March 2015 as it is Maka Bucha Day (Thai public holiday)
Wednesday 15 April 2015 as it is Songkran Festival (Thai public holiday)


Book classification follows the numeral Dewey system.
Books are shelved by subjects for a better visibility.

The Slide Library of the NMV

In the past, the NMV collected a huge amount of slides. Due to the massive changes in technologies, the Slide Library was no more used.

Thanks to the hard work of Fred Prager, this collection was digitized and is available in the Library.

The collection is sorted by countries and subjects.
Set 1 Slides - Thailand - 3,168 slides + 1 Excel List and 1 Word document
Set 2 Slides - Burma, etc - 1,779 slides + 1 Excel List
Set 3 Slides - Korea, Japan, Lao, Cambodia, Vietnam, etc., - 3,379 slides + 17 .Pdf files
Lecture Series - 231 .pdf files + 1 Excel List

Members interested in this collection are invited to visit the library or may order the full package saved on a DVD. A contribution of 100 baths will be charged.

Some files are directly collected on CD.

In 2008, a brand new computerized system was created, managing a complete data base.
Check out and check in is done directly on computer. In a short of time visitors will have access to the data base on a computer.

DVD on Symposium "500 years-Europeans in Siam" now available at the NMV Library

On Feb. 24th 2011 the National Museum Volunteers Bangkok held the successful Symposium "500 years-Europeans in Siam".

You missed the event or want to hear it again: Now two DVDs with all talks are available to members and the interested public. The Donation is only 100 THB.

Availability and services

The Library is located at the rear of the Museum grounds behind the main (Palace) building.

Operating Hours:
Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 am to 3 pm
Except Thai holidays.

Book Loans Conditions
All NMV members are allowed to borrow 4 books and 2 periodicals for a 4 week duration. Non-members are welcome to visit the library and read or consult our books, but not borrow them. All books are loaned on an individual basis. No exception will be made for study-group leaders to borrow books for group participants. Books marked with a red sticker can not be remove from the library.

Overdue Books
All overdue books are subject to a fine of 20 baht per book per week.
A one time extension is allowed on borrowed books by contacting the library by email ( If a late return is necessary, this unpleasant charge maybe avoided by contacting us.

Members are responsible for returning their books to the library. A “Book box” is available at the library to return your books, when the library is closed.
Please do not give your books to other members, any museum staff or leave them with the guards at the Museum gate.

We can copy documents (black/white) for members and visitors or scan directly on a USB stick. A fee of 3 baht per copy will be charged for this service.

You can also pay the membership fee at the library during the opening hours. Please print first the Application Form from our page "Membership"


Our Team of volunteers is always ready to help you with your studies or research. Please do not hesitate to visit the library!
