Thai Ma-Lai: Flower Garlands for welcomes, farewells, ceremonies and rituals

One of the most pleasing sights for foreigners living in Thailand is the flower arrangements unique to this country. We can see the flower garlands for sale in the streets and in local markets. The most frequently made Thai garlands, called "Phuang Malai", use jasmine flowers for their heady scent which can fill a room with a sweet fragrance. They are widely made and sold for use in decorations, ceremonies, in welcoming and fare-welling. Thais will prepare a fresh garland to be offered on special occasions to the spirit house or to be placed reverently at the base of the Buddha images in the family shrine. A beautiful Malai, different from those used in offerings, will always be given to welcome special guests to functions and ceremonies or as a mark of respect at funerals.

We are told that Flower arranging in this way became increasing popular during the reign of King Rama V. The ladies of the Court spent many hours arranging flowers in a variety of special designs. Young girls who lived in the palace received this learning as "finishing school" education under the patronage of the Royal ladies.

We will be given a demonstration of the most common way of making "Phuang Malai"- threading the variety of petals and flowers on a cord with the use of a huge needle. Garlands can vary widely in design according to the maker, mixing styles, colours and using different flowers. Our speaker will talk about the variety of these designs, when and how they are used and maybe you would like to sign up for a workshop to learn to make your own!
