NMV Italian Activities in June, Special Study Session and Excursion
|
Italian National Day is in June and the NMV will have an Italian focus for two activities during that month.
The NMV is delighted to announce that the Dante Alighieri Association has invited us to join them for their annual half day tour, “Italian Architecture in Bangkok”. This will visit historic sites reflecting the influence and role of Italian architects, artists, painters, sculptors and engineers in Bangkok during the reigns of King Rama V and VI. The tour, organised by the Dante, will be held on Saturday 14 June. With places for 80 people, this will be a sell-out event so we are delighted that the NMV has been offered a block of 30 seats.
The NMV is offering this tour in conjunction with a special NMV Study Session.
1. Special Study Session: The Italians in Bangkok during the reigns of King Rama V and Rama VI.
To complement the “Italian Architecture in Bangkok” tour, three NMV members will make presentations during a special study session on the morning of Thursday 5 June 2008.
- Jean Pierre Joly will speak about the city of Bangkok at the end of the nineteenth century and the influence of the Italians on its modernisation.
- Heather Chappell will provide background details about the appointment of the Italians to Siam and she will discuss the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall and Villa Norasingh (Government House).
- John Toomey will profile key Italians including Corrado Feroci (Silpa Bhirasri), Mario Tamagno and Ercole Manfredi and will discuss the relationships among each other and with HRH Prince Naris.

2. Dante Alighieri Association in cooperation with the NMV:
“Italian Architecture in Bangkok” tour.
The purpose of this tour is to view several historic sites which show the influence and role of the Italians in Bangkok at the turn of last century. In 1897, King Rama V commissioned Italian engineers, architects, artists and craftsmen with the intention of turning Bangkok into the modern capital of Siam.
Prof. Paolo Piazzardi, former cultural attaché of the Italian Embassy and author of the book “Italians at the Court of Siam” will lead the tour.
During the tour, participants will see several sites including the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall, Government House and the Silpa Bhirasri Memorial and sculpture hall at Silpakorn University, where there are many of sculptures by Italian artists as well as an exhibit showing the lost wax process used to produce many of these.
After the completion of the tour, a light lunch will be served at the Siam City Hotel and an Italian Exhibition to mark Italian National Day will be opened.

Please note: Please think carefully before requesting a place on this excursion. Whilst we appreciate that sometimes a last minute cancellation may be unavoidable particularly due to illness, recently we have had a high level of withdrawals on the day of the excursion. These last minute changes mean empty places which are wasteful as refreshments and meals have already been ordered and places could have been filled by others on the waiting list.
Dress code
When visiting the Ananta Samahom Throne Hall, it is correct for women to wear a skirt. Men and women should wear a shirt that covers the shoulders and arms.
