Friday 30 May 2008: National Discovery Museum
|
The National Discovery Museum opened in early April 2008 in the former Ministry of Commerce building in Rattanakosin. This Italian designed historic building has been completely converted into a modern, interactive, state of the art museum complex where the general public, and young people in particular, can learn about themselves, Thailand and the world at large.
The National Discovery Museum aims to promote new ways of learning. In particular, it explores all aspects of Thailand, from ethnicity, language, culture, tradition and even horticulture and the subject matter includes Thai and regional art, history, geography, anthropology, archaeology, ethnology, environment, science and technology. The Museum features a permanent exhibition which looks chronologically at Thailand’s history from the time of Suvanabhumi to the present day.
In developing this museum, the intention has been to create an open-ended place of learning and self-discovery. It is not a repository of artefacts, specimens and works of art in the traditional museum sense. The Museum is particularly for Thais and tourists are the secondary audience.
The NMV has arranged for a group of members to be shown this new Museum and to be guided through the permanent exhibition.
After the tour, the group will have a Thai lunch together in the Museum’s Muse Restaurant (included in the donation).

Please note: Please think carefully before requesting a place on this excursion. Whilst we appreciate that sometimes a last minute cancellation may be unavoidable particularly due to illness, recently we have had a high level of withdrawals on the day of the excursion. These last minute changes mean empty places which are wasteful as refreshments and meals have already been ordered and places could have been filled by others on the waiting list. Please only book on this trip if you are sure that you will travel on the day.
