Blind visitor touching Wheel of the LawPurpose:
One of the key roles of the NMV is to make the National Museum Bangkok more accessible to visitors. During 2007, the NMV began working on ways to encourage blind and low vision Thais and foreigners to visit and enjoy our Museum.

Partners:
The NMV is working in partnership with the Thailand Association of the Blind (TAB) and the National Museum Bangkok (NMB) to design and implement access programs for these visitors.

Actions:
Participants from these organisations are working in consultation with each other to develop touch programs. The NMB and TAB are working on the Thai programs and the NMV is designing the English programs. It is hoped that touch programs in other languages may be available in the future.

Touch programs for people who are blind or have low vision

  • In February 2008, in preparation for the pilots of the touch programs, staff from Thailand Association of the Blind (TAB) taught NMB curators and NMV members how to guide and give visual descriptions to blind and low vision visitors.

  • On 23 February 2008, 20 blind Thai students learned about their heritage and history during the first touch pilot program at the NMB.
