The NMV held its eagerly awaited Symposium '500 Years: Europeans in Siam' on February 24th in the Thai National Theater at Sanam Luang, courtesy of the Fine Arts Department. The day was filled with excitement as over 300 guests gathered to listen to a formidable line-up of Thai and foreign experts present various aspects of the multifaceted relationship between Thailand and the Europeans over the past half-millenium. Moreover, the audience enjoyed the chance to vote for their favourite European farang from a list of 10 very strong candidates, all who in some way had an impact on Thailand’s remarkable history. The well-deserved winner was none other than Chao Phya Abhai Raja Gustave Rolin-Jaequemyns, the Belgian former minister who served King Chulalongkorn The Great loyally over many years to establish a modern legal system for Siam.

The NMV would like to express special appreciation for the excellent support and cooperation of The Fine Arts Department, celebrating its centennial this year, and to our Patron M.R. Chakrarot Chitrabongs who also gave a fascinating lecture on the impact of European education on the Siamese elites at the Symposium.

In addition, we are very grateful to all the speakers who came to present their insightful perspectives with great enthusiasm.
Finally, our sponsors, by their support, helped to make this event an outstanding success; we wish to thank them heartily as well.
